The XMB has become a common interface for Sony’s devices, first appearing on the PSX (in Japan) before becoming the standard OS on the PSP and PS3. Sony’s 2013 range of TV sets boast a new, revised version of the same interface.

Sony Files Patent for Technology to Block Used Games
Publishers and console manufactures have been battling with the second hand games market for a while now, but a recent patent filing by Sony could soon change the fight in favor of publishers. The patent, filed by Sony on December 9th 2012, uses NFC technology to recognise if the inserted game has been played by another user, using a different account.
Sony Japan Warning Users About Custom Firmware on PS3
Sony Japan has posted up a message on their website warning users of the dangers of using custom firmware on their PS3 consoles, dubbing it “malware”. The message (according to Google Translate) also warns that using unofficial software breaks the console’s Terms of Use and may result is the user getting banned from the PlayStation Network.
Gaikai Answers Questions Regarding Sony Acquisition
Gaikai has updated its Q&A page to answer questions over the recent Sony acquisition, answering questions that many gamers may have. Gaikai reveals that the team is “working on a number of exciting initiatives.” When asked about Gaikai on Sony platforms, the company said it “cannot share any details at this point in time.”

Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, Andrew House, president and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, has revealed Sony’s plans on how the company will use cloud streaming service Gaikai. Sony announced that it will be acquiring Gaikai early this week.
Nintendo and Microsoft Will Be Missing TGS 2012
Sony will be attending the Tokyo Game Show scheduled to be held in September, however, Microsoft and Nintendo won’t be showing up. Microsoft and Nintendo are both missing from the exhibitors list on the TGS website.
