According to a unofficial looking document we received today, Sony has an unannounced PS3 product that is to be revealed during the Sony GamesCom Press Conference tomorrow. The conference which is to be presented by Kaz Hirai and Andrew House, lists 2 PlayStation 3 TOOL consoles and one unannounced PS3 product. The authenticity of the document is questionable since the it mentions the incorrect date of 18/09/2009.
Earlier this week GameWave, a Hong Kong based weekly magazine, revealed the first photos of the PS3 Slim in their latest issue. Although the photos are unconfirmed, they look pretty convincing especially compared to the leaked photos a few months ago. In our opinion, the design of the console looks poor and perhaps a little too small, compared to what the console looks like currently. You be the judge, check out the photos below.
GameWave, a weekly games magazine in Hong Kong, has features the PlayStation 3 Slim as cover story (click thumbnail to enlarge). The text near the PS3 Slim image reads something to the effect of “Slim PS3 appears at the end of the month.” The magazine seems pretty confident about publishing this story in their weekly mag, but we can’t vouch for the creditability of GameWave.
Is the PS3 already with game developers? The making of video for Batman: Arkham Asylum seems to suggest so. The video, included below, shows two blurred out consoles at the 1:35 timestamp. If this is a normal PS3, why blur it out? It suggests that the PS3 is special, compared to the standard console. But is it actually the PS3 Slim? It is conveniently placed next to a monitor which gives it size away.
Rumors of the PlayStation 3 Slim are coming even faster now, suggesting something is definitely brewing at Sony. The internet is alight with rumours of a planned €100 (£85) price cut on Sony’s current 80GB PS3 model across Europe to be announced at the same time at the launch of a new PS3 Slim at Germany’s GamesCon event on 18 August. The rumours follow the news that Sony is informing Japanese retailers that the 80GB PS3 model will not be shipping after 8 August.
The PlayStation 3 Slim image and product entry has appeared on Amazon Germany’s website. The console is selling for €449 and features a previously unseen photo of the console (probably photoshopped). The entry in Amazon isn’t official either, its a third-party seller and states “2 used from €449.99. What makes this entry even more suspicious is the second product image, which is actually one of the leaked photos from a while back.
Once again, rumors of the PS3 Slim are coming in thick and fast. This time, the rumors suggest the PS3 Slim will be released in August, and will come bundled with Madden NFL 2010. The Madden NFL bundle is said to launch on August 14th 2009, which is a few days ahead of Sony’s Press Conference at GamesCom. The rumors are from the latest 1UP podcast (transcript below).
We’re not sure whether this is real or not, but in a podcast released late last month IGN accidentally reveal they have a PS3 Slim in the office. If this is real, it isn’t the first time something like this has leaked. Rumors of the PS3 Slim have been circulating around for quite some time now, starting with supposedly leaked photos to a recent video of the PS3 Slim in the Philippines. Around 45 minutes and 30 seconds into the Podcast you will notice the quick chatter about the rumors and the confirmation of having one in the office.
Rumors about the PlayStation 3 Slim are still circulating dispite Sony debunking the initial claim. The PS3 Slim photos were first released back in May and later in June the BBC revealed that the PS3 Slim is expected to launch later this year. Now, a PS3 Slim was spotted at a street market retailer in the Philippines. Of course, this doesn’t prove anything as fake consoles are sold all the time and made to look like the real thing. The PlayStation 3 is able to run another operating system in addition to the XMB. To install the bootloader for another OS, you must obtain the “otheros” installer and install it via the Settings menu: [Settings] > [System Settings] > [Install OtherOS]. OtherOS installations are not supported on the PlayStation 3 Slim model (PS3-2000).
Warning: Only attempt this if you know what you are doing. Only a limited number of operating systems will work on the PS3: Fedora Core Linux (5, 6 and 7) and Yellow Dog Linux 5 are just two examples.
