With the recent logo changes to the PlayStation 3, Firmware 3.0 is likely to bring about a change to the boot screen. A video was spotted on YouTube showing the new boot screen already on the pS3 Slim console, sporting the new logo. Currently, the PS3 boot screen says ‘Sony Computer Entertainment’. Only PS3 Slims could have this new boot screen, but it’s difficult to tell at the moment.
The first TV ads for Sony’s new PS3 Slim have surfaced online. This Japanese campaign focuses on the fun your face is having while you play video games. When we mean fun, we mean all kinds of people from different age groups and lifestyles, grunting, laughing, climaxing, what-have-you. More and more details about the PS3 Slim are starting to emerge as we edge closer to the release date. The latest tech news out of Japan indicates that the PS3 Slim will bitstream Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio direct to your receiver. The HDMI chip on the older PS3 models bitstream new high-def codecs like Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA, having to decode it internally and then sending the data to your receiver via LPCM.
The PlayStation 3 Slim, announced on Tuesday, is not only smaller and cheaper, but adds hardware enhancements that make it speedier, including a new Cell microprocessor. Sony has made some enhancements under the hood to boost its processing speed and power efficiency. The slim PS3 carries an upgraded version of the Cell microprocessor, which was jointly developed by IBM, Sony and Toshiba.
If you are thinking of purchasing a PS3 Slim next month, there is something you should know. In order to use the console vertically, Sony recommends you purchase a vertical stand for the console, costing you an additional $25 / €25 on top of the price of the PS3 itself. A 250GB PlayStation 3 Slim console has been discovered on the FCC site. The new model, CECH-2000B, is different to the model announced yesterday at GamesCom, which is model number CECH-2000A. The only difference we can see is that it features a bigger hard drive than the model coming out in September.
We have a complete specification for the PlayStation 3 Slim, which was officially announced earlier today at Sony’s GamesCom Press Conference. The new model features 120GB hard disk drive whilst being significantly slimmer and lighter, with reduced power consumption. Available in stores the week of 1st September 2009, the new PS3 will be priced at €299. The current PS3 will also be reduced to €299 from 19th August 2009. Firmware 3.0 will be released on September 1st to coincide with the launch of the PS3 Slim.
Only moments ago, Sony revealed the PS3 Slim for the first time at the GamesCom Press Conference in Cologne, Germany. The PlayStation 3 Slim is lighter and smaller than the current model, but has the same features. The Slim will be available from the first week of September, retailing for €299 / $299. The price for the current PS3 model has also be reduced, as we saw earlier this week.
Earlier today, Kmart.com ran an advertisement today promoting a “new low price and a new exciting PlayStation 3”. The banner even goes far enough to touch on the rumors of an impending PlayStation 3 price drop and PS3 Slim redesign, but does not show an actual image of the PS3 Slim. The advert seems a bit unusual as the term ‘Playstation’ is used, instead of ‘PlayStation’.
