Speaking to the Times Online at GamesCom, Sony head Kazuo Hirai confirmed that Sony’s answer to Microsoft’s Project Natal is set for a spring launch next year. The motion controller from Sony was originally announced at E3 in July this year. The device, which uses the PSEye to track 3D movement and accelerometer within the device itself to track movement, is expected to be a major step up on Nintendo’s Wiimote.

Motion Controller Update From GamesCom
Interested to see new developments on the Motion Controller for the PlayStation 3? We’ve included the video shown off at GamesCom 2009 below, courtesy of GameTrailers. Although the video is just a developers update, lots of new features are shown off. Sony promises to bring more news and a bigger update at the Tokyo Games Show in September.
Sony’s PS3 Motion Controller “Tracks True 3D and Depth”
At the Game Developers Conference in Brighton this morning, Sony once again showed off their upcoming motion-tracking controller technology during the keynote speech, this time with the emphasis on showing off its “true 3D movement tracking and accuracy”. The device, which was unveiled at E3, uses a wand-like peripheral with built-in accelerometers and a coloured ball at one end which is tracked by the PSEye camera.
