Over at Sony’s GamesCom press conference today, Sony announced that Firmware 3.0 will be arriving on September 1st 2009. It’ll be packing animated themes, a “What’s New” section and more, according to Director of PlayStation Network Operations Eric Lempel on the PlayStation Blog. The latest update incorporates changes that improve navigation on your PS3. According to Lempel, “you’ll notice some cosmetic changes to the design of the XMB. We’ve enhanced the look and feel of the XMB so that it’s easier and even more intuitive to use. We’ve also added network improvements and personalization options to help enhance your PS3 experience.”

A new PSP Firmware update will be available to download soon. The minor update will address system software stability issues during use of some features. Other than that, nothing new has been added to the software update. You will need to update to the latest version in order to access the PlayStation Store on your PSP.

PS3 Firmware 2.76
Sony has released a new firmware update for the PlayStation 3. The firmware update “improves the playback quality of some PS3 format software,” according to PSN Operations director Eric Lempel. No other features have been added to this minor update as far as we know but we will wait for the official changelog before we confirm. You can download the update using the [System Update] feature from the [Settings] menu on your PlayStation 3.
PSP System Software Ver. 5.50
Overall
- The number of folder levels that you can view under Photo, Music and Video has been increased.
Game
- If you select [Internet Search] from the options menu for a game, you can now perform an Internet search based on the name of that game.
Network
- [Trend Micro™ for PSP™] has been added as an option in the Internet browser.
PlayStation®Network
- [Information Board] has been added as a feature under PlayStation®Network. The Information Board displays news about games and the latest information about PlayStation®Store.
- You can now access PlayStation®Store even if you do not have a PlayStation®Network account.
- An option to sign-in automatically is now available for PlayStation®Store. Set [Sign In Automatically (Auto Sign-In)] on the PlayStation®Store sign-in screen.
- [Download All] has been added as an option for use when multiple items are purchased from PlayStation®Store.
- Less free space is now required on Memory Stick Duo™ media when downloading games from PlayStation®Store. Previously, it was necessary to have free space on the Memory Stick Duo equal to twice the size of the game to be downloaded. With system software version 5.50, you can now download games from PlayStation Store to Memory Stick Duo media if there is free space equal to the size of the content to be downloaded.
PSP Firmware 5.50
The latest firmware update for the PSP is now available to download. Firmware v5.50 introduces an Information Board on the PSP system’s XMB (XrossMediaBar) interface. Those of you who have a PLAYSTATION 3 (PS3) may be familiar with this feature, which displays news and updates from the world of PlayStation in a scrolling ticker in the upper right-hand corner of your TV screen. In addition to this, you will now be able to create and access subfolders for photos, music and videos.

- [Dynamic Normalizer] has been added as an option under [Music Settings].
Game
- You can now easily search the Internet for information about your PLAYSTATION®3 format software, as well as for games you purchased from PlayStation®Store. Select the icon for the game, and then select [Internet Search] from the options menu to get search results based on the game title.
Network
- You can now copy and paste text from a Web page viewed in the Internet browser.
- [Copy Address of This Page] and [Copy Address of This Link] have been added as options under [File] in the browse mode menu of the Internet browser.
- [Browser Security] has been added as an option to the browse mode menu of the Internet browser. The websites for the Web filtering services that used to be listed under [Bookmarks] have been moved under this new option.
Friends
- Text chat
- The order in which Friends are listed in the Friends list has been changed. When you have pending requests to add Users as Friends, the icons for these Users are now displayed at the top of the Friends list.
- The maximum size for files that can be attached to messages has been increased to 3MB.
Other
- Polish, Greek, Czech, Slovak, and Turkish can now be displayed in the Internet browser.
PS3 Firmware 2.70
The new PlayStation 3 firmware update is now available to download. Firmware 2.70 adds some great new features to the PlayStation 3 that will enhance your connected experience on the PS3. The 2.70 update brings a new Text Chat feature that enables you to communicate online with your PlayStation Network friends. Now, you’ll be able to chat with up to 15 online friends using the Wireless Keypad, on-screen keyboard, or other compatible keyboard peripherals. Not only can you chat with your friends instantly, but you can also access Text Chat while playing PS3 games and even participate in up to three chat rooms at once.
In addition to the above features, Sony has also added other changes. Here is the changelog:
- Friends list on the XMB (XrossMediaBar)
- Sort your friends via their online status
- Attach larger files to the messages you send to your friends (file size will increase from 1MB to 3MB)
- Video delivery service on PlayStation Store
- Video files you’ve purchased from the PlayStation Store can be backed up to an external storage device and then restored to PS3’s internal hard drive for playback – so you can clear up space on your hard drive and then restore the video anytime in the future
- Videos you’ve purchased for PSP (PlayStation Portable) system can now be transferred to PS3 for playback
