Unlike the Xbox One, which locks the console’s Game DVR features behind a Xbox Live Gold subscription, the PS4 won’t require users to have a PlayStation Plus subscription to use the console’s DVR features. The news was confirmed by a tweet from Sony’s Shuhei Yoshida in response to a question from @jonboi204.

The PlayStation 3 DVR Kit, Torne, will be receiving a major update next month adding several new features. The update will bring the device to version 2.0 and allow users to record HD footage three times longer than the currently supported, and will allow users to pause, rewind or forward TV while recording it.
Japanese DVR Kit to Include Trophies
Last week, we reported that Japan will be getting a DVR Kit similar to PlayTV in Europe, called Torne. More details about the add-on have been revealed since, and we were surprised to see trophy supported amongst the list of features. The “Master of Final Episodes” trophy will be unlocked once the user has watched enough final TV show episodes.
Japan Getting DVR Kit for PlayStation 3
Sony is readying a new PS3 accessory that will let owners turn the console into a digital video recorder. The kit, dubbed “Torne”, is set to become available in Japan this March. Torne comes with a digital tuner that plugs into the PS3 via USB and the software required for viewing, browsing and recording programs. The latter comes on a Blu-ray disc and can be installed onto the PS3’s hard drive. Torne works similar to the PlayTV device that was released in Europe back in September 2008.
