Redesigned PSP Details Revealed
Sources close to Sony have finally revealed details about the successor to the PSP. Sony is focusing on making the PSP lighter by using “a new LED screen that will deliver an ultra-crisp image but take up far less space”, but retaining most of the hardware specification. The battery life of course will be improved, by up to four times, thanks to the LED screen consuming less power and most importantly, the new PSP will include 8GB of built in storage space and a faster UMD drive.
A built-in camera and finish (matte or gloss) are still being decided, but already the new PSP is sounding good. The improved UMD drive should provide quicker game loading and the 8GB built-in flash memory will definitely come in useful for all those MP3s, videos, photos and save data. The PSP’s buttons have been revamped and the D-Pad has gotten a major overhaul, giving portable gamers something more like a Playstation 3 D-pad to play with.
Those of you holding out for a touchscreen are, unfortunately, going to have to wait until Sony’s next portable gaming device. The new PSP will again be black. The final price for this new PSP hasn’t been set, but Sony is hoping to sell it for under $170 or so. Manufacturing should commence in the upcoming weeks, and the product is going to be officially unveiled at this year’s E3. The sale date being tossed around is August, but don’t be surprised if it’s pushed back to September. The new PSP doesn’t have a official name yet…"PSP Lite" anyone?

Crisis Core to Feature 100 Hours of Gamplay
According to a recent interview with the team behind Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, the game is said to feature upto 100 hours of gameplay. Tabata, one of the game’s producers, admits that the title is about 90% complete, with compressing everything to fit on UMD being one of the few remaining tasks for the development team. The game’s main story will most likely take players about 30 hours, but “getting all of the materia in the missions and going out into Midgar for Sub-Events” can boost play time to the triple digits.
Crisis Core will be available to purchase in Japan from September. US and European dates have not been revealed yet.
New PSP Firmware Out Soon?
The recent release of Firmware 1.80 for the PlayStation bought with it remote access to the PS3 from anywhere around the world via the PSP, so with this in mind, a new PSP Firmware release could be right around the corner. Reports suggest that Sony is prepping Firmware 3.50 for the PSP, that will utilize the PS3 to PSP connectivity providing support for the PS3’s new internet-enabled Remote Play feature. The update could be available for download within the next few days.
No word yet on what other features will be available in the firmware update, but we’ll keep you posted on any developments.
UPDATE (29/05/07 02:14 PM):
We have just heard the Firmware 3.50 will include access to the PlayStation Network, but will only be accessible to those who own a PlayStation 3. Only parts of the PlayStation Network will be included in the update, but it’s nice to see that Sony are finally starting to roll out network access. Hopefully, full integration isn’t too far off.
