The PS3 hasn’t had a major firmware update since 2013, but it’s good to see Sony is continuing to patch the PS3 to fix bugs and security issues. The update is mandatory, and is required to access the PlayStation Network.

A minor update for the PS4 has been released, updating the system software version to v5.01. This is a very minor update and is currently not mandatory to install. However, it may be required if you attempt to play some newer games. The changelog indicates that this update improves system performance.

The changelog reveals that a USB 3.0 HDD must be used to make use of the external HDD feature introduced in this firmware update. Other changes include posting of animated GIFs, changes to the Notification system so all notifications appear in a single list, and changes to make creating sub-account much easier.
