The PlayStation Portal uses Wi-Fi to connect to the PS5, so that you can play games remotely. But the speed at which the PS Portal connects to the PS5 will depend on a number of factors. Sony recommends that you connect the PlayStation Portal to your home Wi-Fi connection. But you can connect it to any Wi-Fi network with a fast Internet connection.
For optimal play away from home, ensure you have broadband internet with at least 5Mbps. For the best experience, use a high-speed connection of at least 15Mbps. Since PS Portal Firmware 3.0.0, the remote player can now correctly connect to public Wi-Fi networks that require additional authentication.
The connection time for the PS Portal depends on whether the PS5 is already powered on. When using your Home Wi-Fi network, and the PS5 in Rest Mode, it takes around 30 seconds for the PS Portal to connect. If the PS5 is already powered on, it the PS Portal can take as little as 10 seconds to connect.
Connecting the PS Portal over a mobile data connection or using Public Wi-Fi will take considerably longer. If you found the above video useful, check out my other PlayStation Portal videos here.
