CD Projekt Red have confirmed that their upcoming game, Cyberpunk 2077, will work on both PS5 and Xbox Series X as soon as they are available via a free upgrade for those who purchase the PS4 or Xbox One versions of the game.
The company also mentioned that a “more robust update” will come later for next-gen consoles, but it is not yet known when that will be. The game was this week delayed to 19th November 2020, so it is likely that the enhanced next-gen versions will also be affected.
The news was revealed during a 45-minute call between the developer and investors. The studio confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077’s multiplayer is also delayed.
The wording suggests that day-one support for the next-gen consoles will be via backwards compatibility, but with enhancements to take advantage of the better hardware and higher resolution support. The studio seem unsure of when the enhanced update might arrive, likely to be in 2021.
The full details of the upgrade scheme have not been announced for the PS5, though it will be free for anyone buying the game on PS4. Sony have yet to announce any plans for a cross-gen upgrade plan, but we hope this will be announced soon.
