Sony Improves PSN Security with Two Factor Authentication

Sony has finally beefed up security on the PlayStation Network by introducing 2-Step Verification (2SV). Users can opt-in to 2SV to add an additional layer of security to their PSN Account. If you’re unfamiliar with 2SV, it’s basically a two step process that uses SMS to send time-limited, unique codes to your mobile to confirm your identity. This means that anyone trying to access your account would need to know your email / password, and have access to your mobile device.

The basic flow is as follows:

  1. Login with your email and password (as you currently do)
  2. Sony will send you a SMS with a unique code
  3. Enter a unique code on the next screen
  4. Access your PSN account

The use of 2SV is currently limited to PS4s, Bravia TVs, web browsers, and the PlayStation app. For all other devices, including PS3 and PS Vita, you’ll be able to create a device specific password.

After you initially login to the PS4, the auto-sign-in process will continue to work, so you won’t need to keep entering the unique code when accessing the PlayStation Network. For more information, frequently asked questions, and to set up 2SV, head over to the dedicated page on the Playstation site.

Note: 2-Step Verification (2SV) is also know as Two-Factor Authentication (2FA or TFA).
