Rumour Alert: Sony Working on PS4 Revision Called PS4K

Over the past week, there has been a number of industry reports claiming that Sony is working on a upgraded PS4 model that will support 4K resolution. Kotaku and Eurogamer were the first to report the news, which has now been backed up by the Wall Street Journal.

The new version, dubbed the PS4K, is rumoured to launch before PlayStation VR is released, and is expected to be announced at E3 this year. The report by WSJ says that “the current model and the coming one would share the same software catalogue,” but the new model will provide “enhanced graphics and power.”

The WSJ also reports the new console is “to capture gamers willing to pay for a richer gaming environment, including a high-end virtual-reality experience.” Gamers will need a 4K TV if they’re to make full use of the new console, but with Blu-ray still supporting only supporting HD resolution and very few 4K broadcasters, it will be some time before 4K becomes mainstream.

Pricing for the new console is obviously not known, but with enhanced graphics and a new UHD Blu-ray drive, it’s not going to be cheap. Time will tell if the rumours are true, and more importantly, if existing PS4 owners will shell out for the upgraded version.
