Sony has announced that the PS4 sold over 5.7 million units in the run-up to Christmas in 2015. As of January 3rd 2016, this means that 35.9 million PS4s have been sold worldwide. Sony also revealed that PlayStation Plus membership has increased by 60% compared to the same period last year.
“We are absolutely delighted that so many customers have selected PS4 as the best place to play throughout this holiday season and that the PS4 community is growing more than ever,” said Andrew House, President and Global CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.
With this many sales, it’s clear why the PlayStation Network has been under strain over Christmas and earlier this week.
Official sales figures from Microsoft haven’t been revealed yet, but unofficial sources estimate that over 20 million Xbox One consoles have been sold worldwide to date – a difference of approximately 15 million, compared to the PS4.
