Indie developers got a nice showcase at Sony’s E3 Press Conference, showing a number of new titles coming to the PS4. Sony has clarified that Indie developers can self-publish titles on the PS4, instead of having to go through a publishing company like on the Xbox One. Trailers for games, including Don’t Starve, Octodad: Dadliest Catch and Oddworld: New’n’Tasty was shown off at the event.
Indie games coming to the PS4:
- Secret Ponchos – a new breed of combat game for the PS4. It’s a third-person shooter with unique gameplay elements and art style.
- Outlast – a stealth-based survival horror title that promises to “scare the s*** out of you.” The game is set in an abandoned asylum, with the player controlling a journalist with no weapons or fighting ability. The enemies: escaped mental patients.
- Octodad: Dadliest Catch – the first slapstick fatherhood simulator. The game is all about controlling Octodad to accomplish seemingly mundane tasks, which is no easy task since you are an invertebrate and have eight arms. The environment in the game are destructible, so make a mistake and you’ll be toppling bookshelves, breaking dishes, and rearranging furniture.
- Don’t Starve – an uncompromising, wilderness survival game full of science and magic. You play as Wilson, an intrepid Gentleman Scientist who has been trapped by a demon and transported to a mysterious wilderness world. The aim: exploit the environment and its inhabitants to escape. Basically, you try not to die, but you will. A lot.
- Galal-Z – a 16-bit shooter for the next generation. It’s a 2D spaceship shooter taking cues from classic sci-fi anime worlds of the late ‘70s and early ‘80.
- Mercenary Kings – a 4-player co-op run and gun shooter with a compelling crafting system. Team up with up to 3 friends to take on an evil organization named CLAW. The game has an 8-bit art style, and the crafting system already has over 300 gun parts already in the game so the possibilities are endless.
- Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee New ‘n’ Tasty – a modern remake of Abe’s Oddysee, first shown off at Eurogamer Expo in 2012. The game will also be releasing on the PS4, featuring all the gameplay you expect from the original, revamped, remade and reprocessed in the glorious Unity 3D game engine.
- Transistor – revealed at PAX East earlier this year. The RPG has been in development for a year and a half, taking inspiration from from RPGs like the classic Ultima and Final Fantasy games, to fighting games like Street Fighter II and Samurai Shodown.
- Ray’s The Dead – a cartoon zombie-themed action-puzzler in which the player takes on the role of the undead. You take on the role of Ray, who builds a zombie army on his quest to find out how he was killed, why he was resurrected, and most curiously, why a giant bulb is sticking out of his head.
