Research firm The Diffusion Group said that in the U.S., the PlayStation 3 has the highest percentage of broadband connected consoles when compared to Xbox 360 and Wii. In fact, 78% of PS3 users have their console connected to the Internet, compared to 73% of Xbox 360 owners and only 54% of Wii owners, according to Diffusion Group director of research Michael Greeson.
“Today’s game consoles are increasingly connected to the Internet, not just to enhance their gaming experience but to access the growing variety of online media-video,” says Greeson. Diffusion Group’s survey polled 2,000 adult broadband users in the U.S.
The firm said that it predicts that video game consoles are “best positioned to become the first mainstream over-the-top (OTT) video delivery platform.” Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 allow users to buy or rent movies and download TV shows, while Netflix is available on all three consoles.
