There has been a number of rumors circulating this week regarding Mass Effect 2, currently only available on the Xbox 360. References in the code and anonymous sources confirm that a PS3 version is likely, and expected before the end of the year. Mass Effect 2 has been out for about one week and a half and has gone on to sell well past 2 million units and is now one of the highest ranking Xbox 360 exclusives on Metacritic.
One anonymous source has revealed to GamesThirst that “EA and Bioware wanted Mass Effect 2 on PS3 alongside 360 from launch day but certain constraints with Microsoft wouldn’t allow them to do that, however before the year is out, Mass Effect 2 will be on PS3.”
Whether this rumor is true remains to be seen. Yesterday, Chris Priestly from Bioware has posted a message on the BioWare forums responding to the PS3 reference in the source code saying, “The Unreal Engine is cross platform, hence the PS3 code. This was brought up back in Mass Effect 1 days as well. Mass Effect is for the PC and Xbox 360.”
Until BioWare say the words “Mass Effect is not coming to the PS3? then the rumours will persist. For the moment though, EA and BioWare are trying to keep the PS3 version under wraps.
